Let Me Count the Ways I Love the Olympics

As if the number of distractions in my life is not enough, enter the Olympics.  I LOVE the Olympics.  Seventeen days of pure competitive bliss and an endless amount of soppy "where I came from" stories.  It gets me every time.  That and watching the Olympians parents.  And the cheesy commercials.
We're only 5 days in, and my brain already feels like mush from so much TV.  Madeline has claimed swimming as her favorite event and will even say, "I want to watch swimming now.
No gyn-as-tis (gymnastics)."

Watching the Olympics has made me think alot about what my kids will grow up to be one day.  An athlete (doubtful given their genetics)?  Bookworm (possibly)? Class clown (I could see that)? Spreadsheet driven nerd (ahem...)?  It makes me wonder what my parents thought I'd grow up to be when I was little.

This little dude got a gold medal in "let me roll from my back to tummy then cry until my mommy flips me over and do the same thing over again, then smile because I'm so stinkin' cute."

His big sister will be getting a gold medal for "How many times a day can I ask for M&Ms even though I know I only get them for using the potty, which I've done once."

Now onto venting: How many of you have had Olympics results spoiled due to social media?  I've been successful in avoiding results until today.  A news website I check regularly hadn't posted results since the start of the games, but today they ruined the Women's Gymnastics results for me.  I was not a happy camper.

We just finished watching the Women's gymnastics team get gold, and it was SO exciting even though I knew the results.  Those girls deserve it!  And that Michael Phelps guy?  He's not too shabby either. :)

Happy 6 Months Andrew!

Last week our big guy turned 6 months old!  He is such a sweet boy and we just love him to pieces!

  • Height: 26.5" (48%) Weight: 19 lbs (73%) Head: 16.5" (7%)
  • He's wearing size 4 diapers and 9 month clothes
  • He nurses every 3 hours during the day
  • We started giving him baby food in the morning and evening.  He's had sweet potatoes, carrots, prunes, butternut squash, green beans and pears mixed with rice cereal.  So far he likes everything but green beans.  He'll squawk if we're all sitting at the table and he is not near us in the highchair.
  • We finally moved him upstairs after he turned 5 months.  I'll usually have to go upstairs a few times to put his paci in.  He sleeps from 8pm - 6:15am.  We had to ditch the miracle blanket after he grew out of it and he's not a fan of sleep sacks, so he's just sleeping in long sleeve jammies.
  • He has a few nicknames: little buddy, buddy, little man, and lovebug: none of which are derivatives of Andrew.  :)  Madeline has started calling him little buddy.
  • Same nap schedule: 8-9 am, catnaps while we're running errands, 1-2:30 in the afternoon and sometimes a short nap around 5.
  • He's started to chuckle, mainly when Madeline is trying to entertain him.
  • He is still SUCH a good baby.  He smiles on cue, will let anyone hold him and still only cries when he's hungry or sleepy.
  • He loves to play while laying on his tummy and holding his head up high.  He kicks his legs so hard and tries to get to his toys, but so far no movement (other than rolling back to tummy and scooting on his back).  When he gets tired of trying to move he just lays his head on the ground.
  • He is such a chunky little roly poly.  The kid has major rolls on his thighs and sometimes we call him baby Buddha.
  • He'll bury his head in your neck when he's tired.
  • His favorite toys are Sophie (giraffe that looks like a dog toy), the jumperoo and his toes.
  • He likes to touch people's faces and looks so amazed when he does it.  When something catches his attention he'll stare intently like it's the most interesting thing in the world.

Maddie-isms: Church Edition

  • We were in the cry room and a little girl took a  miselete that was sitting in front of Madeline.  She looks at the girl and in a loud voice says, "Hey, that's Jesus' book!"
  • Last week we were sitting in the big church, and before the collection, the ushers were standing on the side of our pew.  We'd already given Madeline her "Jesus money" so she works her way to the end of our pew and says (very loudly), "Excuse me guys, it's me, Madeline!  I'm ready! Here it is!"

Not Church related, but still cute (to me, at least):
  • She's been randomly coming up to me, hugging my legs, and saying, "I love you too!"
  • Anytime we ask her something (Do you want milk?  Ready to take a bath?) she says, "Oh - Kaaay"
  • She's started calling Jon "Dad" instead of "Daddy".  She'll even correct him and say, "No, you're dad, not daddy."
  • She's big introducing herself and our family to anyone and everyone.  This morning she looks at Jon and says, "I'm Madeline, this is my mommy and this is my baby brother baby Andrew."

Andrew's Magazine Debut

For all of my Texas A&M friends: Have you looked inside the back cover of this month's Texas Aggie magazine??

For non-Aggies:  The picture above was in the Texas Aggie magazine, which is the official magazine of the Association of Former students.  For this Aggie family it's a HUGE deal!  We're so excited!  I submitted the picture in February, and had no idea it was going to be published until we received our copy at home.  I told Jon that if Andrew joins the Corps, I'm framing this to sneak into his dorm room. :)

Fourth of July

We had a fantastic Fourth of July, starting out with matching outfits for the kiddos.  I love to dress them in similar outfits, although the opportunity is rare when you have a boy and girl.

We spent the day at my parents house, playing the pool, eating and drinking...my idea of a perfect summer day!  Madeline had fun showing off the skills she's learning in swim lessons.  That evening we went to a family friends house, the Garcia's, to watch fireworks.  They live on Clear Lake so we were able to see 4 different fireworks displays.  Earlier in the week Jon bought Madeline some poppers and giant sparklers that she could safely hold.  She enjoyed them, but each one burned for almost 10 minutes!

Making shapes with sparklers

Once the actual fireworks started she wasn't very interested, so we ended up leaving the party before they were over. The next morning both kids slept until 8 am and it was awesome.  I hope all of you had a happy 4th!

Maddie-isms and Baby Andrew

We went out to eat Thai food the other night.  Madeline sat down and started flipping through the menu like a pro.  The waiter walked up, she looked right at him and said, "I'd like rice, beans, and a small diet coke."  (I obviously haven't kicked the Taco Cabana habit.)

The other day I was in the kitchen, and Madeline says, "Mommy, I'm going to feed lovey, ok?"  I look over and this is what I see:

(For those of you who are confused by the picture, the blue contraption is a "Boppy", which a baby lays on while you feed him/her.)

Maddie is really starting to be proud of the fact that she has a brother.  She calls him "baby Andrew" and loves to show him off.  She'll point to him and say, "This is my brother baby Andrew and I'm Madeline!"

First time in a high chair.  He loves sitting up high.

Someone had a little too much fun playing.

SO friggin' cute.  He is such a happy boy!

A few months ago I found matching cow outfits for Madeline and Andrew.  It was only appropriate considering Madeline's love for animals and her mild obsession with Granny and Papa K's cows.  In April we had a live photo shoot with the cows and I totally forgot to post them, but they are too cute not to share!

Not cow related, but still cute :)
